Folding the pages and tucking them back into his wallet, Andrzej let out a heavy sigh and wiped his forehead with his handkerchief. Then he slowly rose to his feet and held out his hand. âI am old. Help me back to the house.â
He leaned heavily on me as we walked, as if the telling of the story had exhausted him. I felt heavier too and wanted sleep. Every part of me had started to ache and my head spun.
âNo one was killed, though, so it was OK,â I said. âHe made a mistake, but everyone was fine.â
Andrzej shook his head. He stopped walking and looked over my head at the rows of apple trees. âTwo men died. Two of our best. They found the hole; they went into the ghetto. After that we had to leave, and quickly.â
âBut he didnât mean to do it.â I defended Grandad, feeling almost tearful that his own brother could have been so angry at him for so long.
âI know.â Andrzejâs tone was quieter, gentler. âI know that now, Isla. But I was angry because we were helping people, you see, and then it was taken away from us. Thatâs why I keep his letter with me now. I keep it and read it and remind myself not to be angry.â
Suddenly, I remembered something from the diaries. âThat little girl, the one whose mother was sick. Did you manage to save her?â
âNo. No, I did not.â
My heart felt even more weighted down with that news. A part of me had always known that would be the end of that girlâs story, and why shouldnât it be? Millions of others awaited the same fate. But because I had read that my grandfather and his friends had seen her, had promised to help, I had hoped that somehow, the ending of her story would be different.
